It will be the week of collective focus on ancestral territories, marine territories, and afrodescendant rights, which will lead towards justice and recognition, with the visit of the African Royals to Costa Rica, come March 30th to April 7, 2025.
Costa Rica will host a historic event: the official visit of a delegation of African traditional royal families, which will compose of first and second generation of Kings and Queens.
The arrival and presence of the royal families will create an opportunity for a high-impact strategic meeting, bringing together, African tribal leaders, Afrodescendant and Indigenous communities, activists, and academics to strengthen territorial protection, build global alliances, and promote defending democratic rights in Latin America.
This laudable event is put together by Puerto Viejo Integral Development Association (ADI), the Southern Caribbean Tribal Association (ATACS) in its capacity as the Pro Tempore Secretariat of the Forum of Afro-Costa Rican Tribal Peoples (FPTA), and the Afro Costa Rica Museum (MACR), who acts as official liaisons with Their Royal Highnesses in Costa Rica.
Also, this effort has the support of Afroleaders Costa Rica, the Afro Professionals Network, and the Art and Culture Foundation for Development (FUACDE), in collaboration with the Afro-inclusive Project funded by the European Union.
The all encompassing purpose being to strengthen political participation and recognition of the Afro-descendant community in the country, as well as the Ateker International Development Organization (AIDO), which seeks to create a space for dialogue and action to address challenges related to territorial crises, management, rights, climate change, and racial equity in
the region.
The meeting expectedly amongst other things, will help position the importance of territorial protection for Afro-descendant and Indigenous
communities in Costa Rica and Latin America on the global agenda, at the same time highlight the challenges they face due to state policies, the advancement of extractivism, and real estate speculation.
It will also create an international network for territorial protection: Gather support from African monarchs and Afro-descendant leaders to demand responses from multilateral organizations and governments.
It will strengthen the leadership of Afro-descendant and tribal women: and highlight the role of women as defenders of territory and promote their participation in decision-making spaces.
And lastly, it will influence public opinion and international diplomacy as expectedly, the world is watching Costa Rica and will not sit back to watch, the people of African descent constantly being victimized.
